[A circular address to the Society at Watervliet, N.Y. concerning the education of children]. 1832.

Seth Wells wrote this address to impress on his fellow Shakers at Watervliet the importance of educating children so they would be qualified to be leaders in the Shaker orders. First, the adult Shakers needed to set good examples in their conduct and conversation because children will imitate them. Next, literary instruction was also important, and the adults needed to encourage the children in their literary endeavors. School visits by all adults should be encouraged because these inspire the students to work hard. Wells' statements were approved by the school trustees and signed by Stephen Wells, G. V. Woosen, and F. S. Wicker.
